We are in Kansas City right now for John's Baseball Birthday weekend. I have been super excited about our weekend away! It will great to spend the weekend alone with John. As much as I adore the boys, it's nice to be able to get away.
After going out to lunch and spending the afternoon with the boys, we dropped them off with John's parents and headed down to KC. We got to our hotel at about 10:30 last night, got settled, then went for a late dinner at Steak N Shake. After our disaster at one on the way to NY last year I was a little hesitant, but pleasantly surprised that our experience there last night was very good. The plan for today is to maybe check out the mall, get some awesome Zarda's BBQ, then head to Kauffman stadium to see the Royals play the Red Sox tonight! We have tickets to tomorrow's game too, after which we are going to head back home.
I'm looking forward to an awesome night of baseball tonight! Anyone else have fun plans for this weekend?

Birthday Date Night and Oz The Great and Powerful
The weekend before last we went out for my birthday and had a super fun time. It was really nice to have a night out, it doesn't happen very often. We decided to do the dinner and a movie date backwards, and I liked it a lot better. We dropped the boys off at John's parents and headed off to an earlier showing of the movie. I had been debating between Oz The Great and Powerful and The Amazing Burt Wonderstone, but I really really wanted to see Oz, and so we did.
John and I both loved the movie, but I was very surprised to find out a few days later that it was only rated PG. John and I actually commented when we got to the theater about how surprised we were at all the little kids in the audience. I'll try to not give away any spoilers, but proceed with caution if you haven't seen the movie and want to. Perhaps I am getting older, but in my personal opinion I don't think I would take anyone younger than about 10. But obviously you know your children better than anyone. There is no blood or gore, but there is violence, death, and those flying monkeys (baboons actually) are really very scary (seriously, I'm surprised I didn't have nightmares).
Ok possible spoilers start here (I'm not giving away any big plot points): At one point the monkeys attack a field of what turns out to be scarecrows, but they are frighteningly vicious about it. And although the destruction happens off screen, Oz comes across a demolished town where the only survivor is a little girl, and you know that her whole family has just been killed. Since having the boys I've become a lot more sensitive to things like this though.
Alright, end of possible spoilers. The cast was great, and honestly, I really loved their costumes. I read that the costume designers based the clothing on the period that the books were written in (the 1930's I think) and were made a bit over the top for the land of Oz. The movie starts out in black and white and changes to color after arriving in Oz. It's obvious that they flexed their movie magic muscles for the scene where Oz arrives in Oz. John thought that it was a little too much, but I thought it was almost breath taking. We saw it in 2-D, but it was filmed in 3-D. After watching it in 2-D I think I would like to see it in 3-D, which is saying a whole lot because I really am not a fan of 3-D (hello migraine!) So if you enjoy 3-D and are on the fence about how to see it, I would go 3-D. Overall John and I really enjoyed it, but perhaps it should have been rated PG-13. So just be aware if you plan on taking your kids.
After the movie we headed to Red Lobster, yum! I grew up in New England and loooove seafood. I really like Red Lobster, but I do miss the seafood back there, it's just not the same here (you know, living in a landlocked state in the middle of the country). And let me tell you, it was so nice to be able to just sit and enjoy dinner and not have to worry about making it to the movie on time. I think we should do date night like this more often! Unfortunately I had caught a bit of a bug earlier in the week and was still feeling kind of yucky. While my taste buds loved my dinner, my stomach not as much, so I didn't eat a whole bunch. But I took my leftovers home and they were just as yummy the next day when I was feeling better. It was my birthday, so on top of our appetizer and dinners I ordered the lobster bisque and managed to eat all of it. I've had it before and it is so yummy, I love lobster bisque. It is delicious and not something you find often when not on the coast. Oh man, I am soooo going to be craving seafood later. It also doesn't help that yesterday at the store they had perfect looking swordfish (omg yum!) and even at $11.49/lb I was sorely tempted, but didn't end up getting.
Anyways, other than feeling kind of yucky still, backwards date night for my birthday was great, we had a such a nice time!

Happy 2nd Birthday to My Two Favorite Little Men!
On January 14 my two favorite little people turned 2! (A little late I know, it took me much longer than I thought to gather all my pics together in one spot. And time, I feel like I never have enough time in the day for everything.) They were born early at 34 weeks and 5 days and weighed just 4lbs 7.8oz (Owynn) and 5lbs 2 oz (Oliver). When we went to the Dr. last month Owynn was 26lbs and Oliver 28lbs. They are finally catching up and are close to the size of your average 2 year old.
I really can't believe how fast the time has gone by and just how much they've changed. Over the past 2 years we have moved 3 times, and driven to NY twice. They have gone from tiny little fragile babies to rambunctious toddlers. In the past year they have learned to talk, to walk and run; and have become crazy climbing monkeys with no fear. Right now they love Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Owynn calls Goofy goosey. Owynn is farther along with his speech, but Oliver is very smart with electronic-y things. He has my phone all figured out and has almost got angry birds down. They love to read, well more so look at books and have me read to them; but they really do love books. I wish they would stay little longer, they are growing so fast. When I was pregnant and people told me that the time would go by fast and that I would love them in a way I didn't know I could, I didn't believe them. I do now though, they are the best things to ever happen to us.
Let me show you how much my wonderful and adorable little boys have grown! (I may be a bit biased though.)
The pictures are a bit out of order, I still haven't quite gotten the hang of moving pictures around on here.

We're Back From Our Winter Hiatus!
I'm hoping my winter hiatus is over. Like most of our tv shows! We haven't been so much busy here as sick. Thanksgiving was good. Our weather was gorgeous, just days before we were having beautiful sunny days in the 70's. It was a little weird listening to Christmas music while it was so unseasonably warm.
Then we all caught super mega awful worst cold ever. I wonder if it may have been the flu, it was horrendous. I lost my voice for almost a week and I missed two days of work. I finally dragged everyone to see the doctor. Everyone else was fine, but I got antibiotics and man did they help. Apparently my throat was still all nice and swollen and red. And then immediately after we all caught the stomach bug. Ugh! Christmas was great though!
We were all healthy for the week between Christmas and New Year's, but by the time the boys' birthday rolled around we were all sick again. I succumbed to the cold this past Friday and then on Sunday I managed to severely mess up my stomach. I finally started feeling better Thursday night.
The boys are doing much better now too. I am sooooo ready for Spring and to be healthy again for some sort of extended period of time. Between work, everything going on at home, and being sick, I just haven't had the time or energy for much of anything else. I've barely been on the computer, never mind blogging. On Tuesday I was able to take almost a 3 hour nap after work, it was amazing!
On a happier note John filed our taxes last week. The company John used holds our filing until the IRS starts accepting them, which was supposed to be on the 30th. But today John got a text saying that our filing was accepted by the IRS. OMG! It is such a relief. I'm really hoping we get our refund soon, we could really really use the money. I'm thrilled though that they accepted them early. Tomorrow is Friday and we earned jeans day again, I love jeans Fridays. And it's Friday! Yay for the weekend! I am hoping to try and get some more posts together this weekend for next week.
Enjoy your weekend!

World Prematurity Day. Our Story.
Eventually I want to write in detail about my pregnancy, I think mostly because when I was pregnant I had a hard time finding information about twin pregnancy. There is an overwhelming amount of information out there about having a baby, but not so much about having more than one. Today I want to talk some about dealing with my preterm labor and the boys premature birth. I talk about my pregnancy usually in general terms and I joke about it at times, but in all honestly it was the hardest thing I have ever had to deal with.
According to the WHO today is the second annual World Prematurity Day. And today I am so very very thankful for modern medicine which helped me carry the boys for as long as I did. Two years ago today I was in a hospital in Omaha praying that the boys would stay in there just a little while longer. And thank God they did, they were born pretty darn healthy at 34 weeks and 5 days gestation.
My first two trimesters of pregnancy were a breeze. I had no morning sickness, just the unrelenting exhaustion that comes along with pregnancy. I was one of those women who had the glow of a happy pregnancy. I was thrilled to finally be pregnant and I loved those two little beings growing inside of me from the moment I knew they were there. Our blissful state came to a crashing end when I was just 25 weeks along. It was just a few days after my baby shower and exactly one week before Thanksgiving. I had been at work all day and I just didn't feel right. I couldn't exactly put my finger on it, but I just knew something was going on. A bit of TMI here, but I kept having this weird feeling down very low like you have to go to the bathroom but nothing ever happens when you run in there. So I called my ob office after I got off work and the on call dr. told me I should head off to the hospital. Not the one I had toured and was thinking about giving birth in, but a hospital more prepared for emergencies that John and I had yet to go to. I was driving home and was about halfway between home and the hospital, and I remember arguing with John that I was indeed going to come home and pick him up before heading off to the hospital. We only had one working car at the time and I was not about to go to this new hospital all by myself. And I am so so thankful that I insisted on picking him up before heading to the hospital so he could be there with me. When we got to the hospital I still wasn't too terribly worried, I figured they would check me out, hydrate me, and then send us home. It turned out though that at just 25 weeks I was already 2cm dilated and starting to efface, I was in some very preterm labor. The memories of the week I spent there are a bit fuzzy, I think mostly because of the magnesium drip I was on the first several days, that stuff really knocked me out and left me with that really drugged feeling. I remember there being a flurry of doctors and nurses and lots of drugs to try and stop my labor and to help us if they couldn't. I got two steroid shots to force the boys lungs to develop more quickly in case they were born early. They were the most painful shots I have ever had, but I am so glad I had them. When the boys finally did come, they did not need any breathing assistance at all, and that was a HUGE deal. I remember the hospital sending up a nurse from the NICU to try and prepare me for what may happen if the boys came so early. They would have about a 60% chance of survival (that would increase every week I could stay pregnant) and a high chance that something could be permanently wrong with one or both the boys. They would most likely stay in the NICU until at least my due date, which was in February. The first 24 hours were the scariest, but thankfully they were able to stop my labor, and I was actually able to go home on strict bed rest the day before Thanksgiving.
My big goal I set for myself was to make it to 32 weeks, and I celebrated every week that passed that I managed to stay pregnant. In all honesty though I was not a happy pregnant lady at the end. I was in a lot of pain and discomfort and I just couldn't wait to be done. I was tired of going to the hospital constantly and getting ivs and shots, and then being sent home again empty handed. I remember calling my mom several times and complaining about how unhappy I was. She kept reassuring me that once the boys were born and I held them for the first time that it would be all worth it. I really didn't believer her until I did get to hold them, and my whole life changed in an instant.
I would wind up back in the hospital 8 more times for preterm labor before the boys were finally born. I was sent to the hospital that final time because my blood pressure had spiked, it was a Wednesday evening in January and I was 34 weeks pregnant. I had to have a 24 hour urine test to see if there was protein in there, which would show if I had developed pre-eclampsia. At about 1am Friday morning my contractions started again and luckily my ob was just a few rooms down delivering a baby. She got my test results and it turns out I had developed pre-eclampsia. That coupled with my contractions returning, I was scheduled for a c-section that afternoon. I had to have a c-section because Oliver was breach and Owynn was transverse, my ob had told me that if at least one of them were in the correct position I could try for a vaginal delivery. I was terrified of having a c-section, and I got no sleep that night knowing that in less than 12 hours our boys would be born. They ended up pushing my c-section up, which sent me almost into a panic, but that way I had less time to worry about having it. The c-section itself was a whole lot easier than I feared it would be, I was in and out in less than an hour. It was the recovery that I had the most difficulty with. Owynn was born at 11:26am on Jan. 14, 2011 at 4lbs 7.8oz 18&1/2 inches long. Oliver was born two minutes later at 11:28am at 5lbs 2oz and 18 inches long. I remember I was absolutely thrilled they were born with hair, I don't know why I was so obsessed with that at the time, it was the first question I asked after making sure they were ok. They needed no breathing assistance at all, which was amazing, and were able to stay with us in the OR until the doctors were done with me. John and the boys went down to the NICU while I was sent back to my room to recover. I had to go back on a magnesium drip for the first 24 hours after my c-section because I had pre-eclampsia. I couldn't leave my bed, never mind see the boys. It was awful. I was elated when the nurse finally came in and said I could go see them. By the time she got me up and prepped, I was so incredibly weak and light headed that I needed to stay and eat lunch before I could head down to the NICU.
Thankfully they boys were born big and healthy, just extra early. They only had to spend 9 days in the NICU, we got to bring them home on the day I would have been 36 weeks pregnant. I was discharged the Wednesday evening following their birth, and going home without the boys is by far the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I cried the whole way home. The nurses at the NICU were all super nice and very supportive, they all loved taking care of the boys, they said the boys were some of the easiest babies they have ever had to care for. The boys loved their sleep, and liked to eat. The nurses would actually have to wake the boys up every 4 hours just to eat. Before the boys could come home they had to be able to regulate their own temperature, get over their bit of jaundice, and show that they were eating and growing well.
Today the boys are normal 22 month olds, Owynn weighs 25lbs and Oliver weighs 28lbs. Here are some pictures of them while they were very tiny and still in the NICU.

Up All Night
It's almost 4am here and I'm still awake. It's like Friday nights have some sort of weekend magic where I can manage to stay up all night. I stay up really late most Friday nights / Saturday mornings and I'm not 100% sure why. Maybe it's because I get alone time? I mean usually we don't have anything going on Saturday mornings, although I always end up regretting staying up so late. I'm not really doing anything important. I usually spend my time watching mindless tv, playing on facebook, reading blogs, and working on mine. It's a nice way to unwind though after a long week.
This week has been long too. Work was just kind of off all week. We were pretty busy, like we always are at this time of the year; but it's more because this week has been marked by some pretty significant losses. I don't think I should go into too much detail (sorry people), but a former co-worker suffered a major loss in their family (this hit everyone very hard). And one of our great senior techs is leaving; it's a really great opportunity for her and we are all very happy for her, but she is going to be sorely missed.
I have been really looking forward to this weekend though! John's parents have been nice enough to get the boys haircuts today (Saturday), I really can't wait to go. Oliver's hair is getting totally unruly, it just sticks out everywhere. Owynn's hair is so long it's starting to get into his eyes, it's just so shaggy! At least with Oliver I can touch up his hair a bit between haircuts so it stays out of his eyes, but Owynn won't let me anywhere near his hair. Sunday we are going to John's best friend's 30th Birthday Party, we are bowling then going out to dinner at the place they all used to hang out at in high school. Should be lots of fun!
Birthdays!
I want to wish a wonderful 30th Birthday to my husband John!
He isn't too thrilled about turning the big 3-0 and I can't say I blame him, I'll be in the same boat in a couple of years. I will make a longer post wishing him an awesome birthday later this week when I am home and we have internet back. Our friends P&W are totally awesome and are throwing John a birthday party later this afternoon, I for one am super excited!
Also, Happy early Birthday to my Dad whose birthday is tomorrow! I miss you and wish we could be there again this year to help celebrate. And Happy Anniversary to my parents who are celebrating 29 years together tomorrow too!
